I’ve used the following helmets: Giro Atmos, Lazer Genesis, LG Course, Kask Mojito and now the POC Octal. The Octal is my hands down favorite. It has so many great features that it’s difficult to know where to start. The first thing I noticed is how incredibly light it is. I weighed it and it’s 245 grams The Kask Mojito is 311 grams. With the Octal it feels like I’m not even wearing a helmet. I also love that it sits forward and low on my head. The Atmos and Mojito both rode up my forehead as I rode and that annoyed me. The Octal is also majorly ventilated which is crucial for riding in SW Florida where I live. However, it’s so ventilated that on a cold day you might want a cycling cap or insulated skully underneath the helmet. I wear a lightweight skully all the time to protect my head from the sun. It doesn’t get cold enough here to necessitate anything warmer than a liner. The helmet straps are simple and fixed in place on both sides and that works for me. You don’t have to mess with them. You can of course easily adjust the length under your jawline. The straps are made of a very lightweight nylon. They’re so thin, light, and comfortable that I can’t even feel them. The tightness of the helmet around your head adjusts easily with click wheel which is good because you do need to re-tighten it periodically. My POC is a medium and my head is 57 ½ cm. I have very little room to spare on the size medium. To put the helmet on I have to open it as wide as it will go. Then I put it on just above my eyebrows and tighten it ever so slightly. The medium gives me very little wiggle room so if your head is the same size as mine and you want to wear a cycling cap or thicker skully you might need a size large. My helmet color is Bohrium Red which is a bright, glossy red. Both my Oakley Radars and POC Half Blade sunglasses lock tightly into this helmet so apparently the “eye garage” really works. I know the look/style of this helmet can be polarizing but personally I think it looks totally pro and I’ve received some positive feedback on it’s appearance from a number of people including my wife who I know is being totally honest (she’s made fun of how some of my other helmets look). As a bonus I bought this helmet “used” in “very good” for only $115 from Amazon Warehouse Deals. I was expecting a helmet that had actually been used but my helmet arrived in new condition with the tags still attached. The box it came in was damaged but who cares about that. I’m assuming this was either a return or just damaged packaging which is why they marked it as used. I would definitely pay more for this helmet. The only negative to this helmet is that the straps and helmet tension adjuster does loosen over time. Other reviews mention that and it’s slightly annoying which is why I went 4 stars instead of 5.I must be nuts but I plunged in and actually spent two hundred bucks on a bike helmet, and now that I've worn in on my first ride, I wouldn't trade this for anything else, it's just perfect. I have a big noggin, take a 7-3/4" fitted cap and even that can be a tad snug, so I though for sure that a Large would be too small, but that's the biggest size they make and someone I know suggested this helmet for big heads. Turns out it has an adjustable band on the inside, just turn the dial and try it until it fits, and it's GREAT. The helmet is so comfortable and actually feels like it will protect you. My old Bell was more like half of an almond shell, it just sat on top of your head, not really sure how that protects you. This POC fits great and the airflow is superb. They make the top forward slots in such a way that it has plastic sliders to allow you to slide your sunglasses in above for when you stop, and they hold tight. Speaking of sunglasses, I got This is probably the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. It's also probably the least stylish, but I can live with that for comfort and safety--besides, I don't have to look at myself when I'm wearing the helmet.I took one star off my rating for two reasons: 1) the image of the navy black helmet that I ordered showed a Raceday logo on it. The helmet I received does not have that logo. I know that some colors have the logo, and some colors don't, but I could not get a straight answer as to why the navy black helmet I received does not have the logo, when all the images with that color do have the logo. The seller (Competitive Cyclist) offered to let me return the helmet, but I wasn't going to bother with that just on account of a missing logo. It did make me concerned about whether it was the genuine item, but I think it is. Hopefully, I won't have to crash to test my beliefs. 2) The helmet has some tabs on the inside that are supposed to let you adjust the vertical height of the helmet on your head. I only discovered this by reading some online reviews. None of the literature that comes with the helmet, nor the features listed on Amazon or Competitive Cyclist websites mention this feature. I was unable to make the adjustment, partly because I didn't want to force the matter. It seems like there should be an easy way to do this, but I couldn't figure it out. I've sent a question to the community to see if anyone can tell me how to do it. I may also try to call Competitive Cyclist directly to ask for their technical assistance. Would have been nice if instructions were included.
